Gaswagen (mobile gas chamber)
Authenticity of the perpetrator’s language
As further preparatory work (following contributions by Prof. Oliver Rathkolb and Director Jochen Böhler of the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies, see below), I would like to present my artwork from the PRE-PRINTS series, created in 2005, in preparation for the video GESETZ und VERBRECHEN/Law and Crime.
GASWAGEN shows excerpts from a report [memo from Department 11 D 3 (motor transport) of the RSHA] by SS–Sturmführer Walther Rauff to his superiors about technical improvements to the so-called Gaswagen, “mobile gas chambers.”
These mobile gas chambers were used from 1941 onward by the SS in eastern Europe to murder Jews and other stigmatized groups.
The cruel, technocratic character of the text depicts the human beast in a unique way and, as a historical document, represents the logical end point of the Nuremberg Laws, which were enacted 90 years ago, on September 15.
Walther Rauff escaped justice. Philippe Sands’ new book offers interesting insight into his life in Chile after World War II.
Austrian Bishop Alois Hudal was one of the Vatican agents who helped Nazis escape. A chapter in my book Law and Crime offers information about him.
